It’s Got Legs

December 31, 2008 Leave a comment

Medonza was our second and last stop in Argentina. Known the world over for its wine production we had to try some wine tasting. In fact that was the one reason we came here.

All was not quite plain sailing though. Somehow or other the luggage compartment of the bus from Salta to Mendoza had flooded and Kath’s bag was well and truely soggy when we got it out. On top of that we turned up to a hostel who had managed not to take our phone booking. Even more of a shame because it had a pool and a bar! We’d chosen this place because here we would be leaving Tam on her own again after our fantastic company of the last few weeks. The hostel was known for it’s livelyness and Tam wanted some new friends!

Tam was in luck, there were dorm places left but the one double room was being held for friends of the owner who may or maynot turn up. Talk about frustration! We ended up in a hotel a few blocks away but helped ourselves to the pool and facilities we felt we deserved.

The next day we booked ourselves on a cheep and chearful whistle stop wine tasting tour. Two wineries, five wines. I think you get what you pay for when it comes to winetasting and our trip was cheep. I had fun and learnt a tiny bit (good wine has legs – more legs the better!) but it was rushed for sure and any info about tasting was brief. Still we got see how wine was made by a big and small winnery and a vineyard. Later we set up our own tasting (with three choice participants!) and made up our own minds. The result – we needed a bigger budget!

Argentina

Limited time in Argentina meant we could only skim by a couple of places. We chose Salta and Mendoza.

Don’t know what I was expecting from Argentina but what we got was somewhere we’d love to go back to again. After Bolivia, it was so easy! Far from the dusty backpacking wildernesses we’d been used to, Salta was as fancy as you’d like. We managed to blow our entire souvenir budget in about 10 seconds (not that have any souvenir budget at all anyway!)

35 Second Update

December 16, 2008 Leave a comment

14th of December and 3 months 4 days into the trip, the last few weeks have been pretty hectic. Our first change of plans and we managed to add a whole extra country to our itinerary. Instead of bussing all the way back from the bottom of Bolivia to La Paz to fly to Santiago in Chile we did a short hop over the border from Tupiza in Bolivia to Argentina. It also meant we could stay with our traveling buddy Tam a few more days and eventually get some much needed chillout time by the pool.

So in the last few weeks we’ve bussed down from Tupiza in Bolivia to Santiago in Chile via Salta and Mendoza in Argentina and then from Santiago we flew to Easter Island for five days and I’m now writing this from Tahiti. Tomorrow we fly to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and a few hours later to Aitutaki where we’re going to spend Christmas . We’ve got a whole ten days there which will be such a great break. After that we’re back to Rarotonga for a New Years Eve knees up. Can’t wait!

Aitutaki

Not sure what wireless access will be like there but got loads of things to post.
